Presidents Prize Presentation

It is a Club tradition that the incumbent President can mark a members' exceptional service to club members throughout a season  through the award of the 'Presidents Prize'.  It comes as no surprise that this years President, David Banks, has singled out the tremendous efforts of Chris Dennis and Ken Joy which have given us the opportunity to enjoy friendly but competitive bowling in a season where at one time it looked as if our whites/greys would remain in the wardrobe, our bowls in the garage and gardens tilled and watered to death.

The Cup was presented by David on the opening day of the Club Finals Weekend.  Chris was also presented with an additional alcoholic  'Thank You' from the Club Members themselves in recognition of the hours he put in managing rink bookings, recording results and smoothing ruffled feathers over the last 4 months.

Branksome Park v Argyll (away) 6th September 2020

Sunday saw us royally entertained by Argyll Bowling Club our nearest neighbours.  The green was a little heavier than ours but the bowls rolled really well and we were lucky to have a nice sunny day.  Both greens were in use and there was plenty of support for home and away.  Argyll made us really welcome and there was a lot of friendly banter on all the rinks.
 

The result was three rinks each although we probably accrued more shots overall but as usual bowls was the winner and we look forward to returning to a competitive game next year in the B&DBA league.

Stuart Stephens, John Pinson and Terry Lemon had a close battle and held four on the last end for a draw but their skip rolled in his last wood to get a second so the game ended 16/19.

Chris Dennis, Barrie Wellman and Frank Westfield wilted under a blitz of good bowling and banter but managed to get to double figures losing 10/24.
 

Alan Bliss, Mike Barron and Alan Gamblin strode confidently onto the green and galvanised by their skip romped to a 22/8.
 

Geoff Shand, Ian Vietch travelling up from Devon and Roy Cole gelled well and after a close game ran out winners 19/17.
 

Brian Cookson, Deric Pritchard and Julian Cooke brough home the bacon with a fantastic 35/10 win.  All that rest from the Singles ladder has paid off for Brian!

Bob Harris, Roy Trayler and Tony Jennings were the last to finish with the crowd baying at 13/13 their number two rolled in two woods followed by their skip to give them a three shot lead.  Up steps a very determined Bob Harris who rolled in a wood for second, so they knocked elbows on 14/13 a great end to a great afternoon.

Finally a big thank you to Charlie Graham for organising the day and extending the invite to us.

Branksome Park v Kings Park (home) 29th August 2020

On Saturday 29th August we entertained Kings Park at home in a mixed triples challenge.  The weather was kind to us with some brilliant sunshine and the odd cloudy spell.  Bob Harris was Captain of the Day and led from the front with Sue and Bill Harris in a 19/12 win.

Chris Hollier, Graham New and Barrie Wellman played consistently and won 19/13.

On a difficult outside rink number 1 Mike Barron, Terry lemon and Tony Jennings lost on the last end 12/14.

Next game is away to Argyll on Sunday 6th September at 1400hrs.

Branksome Park v Knyveton Gardens (home and away) 15th August 2020

This morning l was in Hampshire and the rain was horrendous so l was very surprised to see us bowling at home in damp but very humid conditions.

The overall result at Branksome Park was 52/40 to Branksome who won on all 3 rinks.  Brian Cookson supported by Alan Gamblin and Jen Cookson won by 7 shots  19/12, Bob Harris with Bill Harris (deputising for Sue Harris who was under the weather but now feeling better) and George Stevens (first time out this year) won by 3 shots 18/15, and Val Baxter (who questioned my wise choice to make her skip, both men on the rink clearly needed direction!!  Well done Val!), Terry Lemon and Arthur Baxter squeezed across the line with a measure for shot on the final end to win by 2 shots 15/13.

Away at Knyveton the guys were clearly put off by all the beer at the end of the rink!

Deric Pritchard's rink lost by 4 shots 13/17, Chris Hollier's rink lost by 12 shots 8/20 and Ken Joy's rink lost by 4 shots 11/15 after rolling in a fantastic last bowl to take an extra shot.  Even Bev Dennis applauded that one.

So overall three rinks each with Knyveton edging the day by +8 shots overall.

All played in the best possible taste.
